2020 has been an unpredictable year, to say the least. As we head for 2021, it's important to take stock of some of the major factors influencing the real estate market here in Chicago and around the country — including generational trends among buyers. In particular, younger buyers are helping to drive the market forward right now, and shaping what we may expect to see in the years and decades to come.  This includes not only Millennial homebuyers — defined by Pew Research Center as those born between 1981 to 1996 — but also members of Generation Z. Pew defines Gen Z broadly as anyone born after 1996; this would make Gen Z-ers 24 or younger as of 2020.

This past year has brought much uncertainty and even more change. We've all spent a lot of time at home recently. And with winter approaching, people around Chicagoland are sure to keep cozying up in the months ahead! As we all spend more time at home, it's a good time to start thinking about remodeling and repurposing the spaces we use every single day — especially as we look forward to 2021. Home experts agree that design and decor trends for the next year are going to center around creating a sense of calm at home — that is, creating a harmonious and comforting space that can be a sanctuary from the rest of the world. Looking ahead, the overarching theme for 2021 seems to be "comfort and security" — with design and decor trends to match. From comfortable, cozy, and sustainable materials; to multi-functional spaces; to home elements that promote healthy living, here are some key trends to watch for the year ahead:

Spending more time at home in 2020? In the last few months of working and learning from home, you may have noticed that you're running low on storage. If you're dealing with piles of clothes, overflowing closets, and jam-packed cabinets, you're definitely not alone — and there are plenty of steps you can take to make the most of your home's storage potential.  Even before the pandemic, storage was one of the most in-demand home features among buyers. A 2019 report from REALTOR© Magazine, for instance, found that more than 53 percent of first-time homebuyers listed "storage" as one of their most important home features —  ranking it as one of their top three most requested home elements, overall. Whether you're in a vintage apartment, a cozy Chicago bungalow, or a mid-century masterpiece in the Chicagoland suburbs, every home could use a little extra room. Here are ten easy and effective ideas for maximizing the storage space in your home's closets and cabinets:

If you're like so many of us here in Chicagoland, you probably spent more time outdoors this summer than ever before. Since we couldn't travel as much, many people went to great lengths to make their outdoor spaces, big and small, feel more like a comfortable, fun extension of home. That includes making a major investment in new patio furniture and outdoor decor, which have seen booming sales in recent months.  Now, the leaves are turning red and gold and nighttime temperatures are making us feel just a little nostalgic for those warm summer evenings.  Chicago winters can be brutal, and not just because of the icy cold or the biting winds off of Lake Michigan. Our legendary winters can blow snow, ice, and slushy rain onto your porch or balcony — and cause damage to all of the brand new patio furniture you invested in this year. What should you do with it now, as cold temperatures and precipitation swirl closer? Here are a few things to keep in mind for transitioning your patio furniture and outdoor decor from spring to winter:
